New Back Issues

I have just made some more back issues of the Patreon essays available for purchase. First, on Amazon, there is Myths of Creation and Amaterasu. This combines two of my past essays, Shinto Myths and Myths of Amaterasu, and explains the sources for early Shinto myths, and the role they have played in Shinto and Japan, before going on to retell some of the myths. They include the variant forms of the myths found in different sources, which can sometimes be really different.

Parts of these essays are included in An Introduction to Shinto, but only about a third of Myths of Amaterasu, and a very small amount of Shinto Myths, so even if you have the book, there is a lot of new material here. It also covers some of the most famous of the Shinto myths, so I think it is worth reading if you have any interest in the mythical side of Shinto.

The second is last month’s new essay, The Accession of Jinmu Tennō, which is available on Gumroad. This is another essay about myths, and covers the stories about what happens to Jinmu Tennō after he has conquered Yamato. From a Shinto perspective, the stories about his empress and about the rituals performed at his palace are particularly interesting. The essay also covers the proclamation that he is said to have issued on his accession. This is not so important for Shinto per se, but it was of great political importance in pre-war Japan.

If either of those sound interesting to you, please take a look.

I have a Patreon, where people join as paid members to receive an in-depth essay on some aspect of Shinto every month, or as free members to receive notifications of updates to this blog. If that sounds interesting to you, please take a look.
